KPV Peptide: A Research Overview
KPV is the name given to the tripeptide sequence Lysine-Proline-Valine — the C-terminal three amino acids of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). Despite being a small fragment of a larger parent molecule, it has attracted its own dedicated body of laboratory research, largely because it appears to retain certain activity independent of classical melanocortin receptor binding.
Structure and Origin
Full-length α-MSH is a 13-amino-acid peptide. KPV represents just its final three residues. Because it is so short, it does not engage MC1R in the same way that larger analogues like Melanotan 1 and Melanotan 2 do — this is precisely what makes it useful as a research tool for isolating melanocortin-receptor-independent effects from receptor-mediated ones.
Why It's Studied Separately
Researchers use KPV alongside full-length melanocortin agonists specifically to distinguish which observed effects in a cell model depend on MC1R/MC3R/MC4R activation, and which occur through other pathways. This comparative approach is common in melanocortin pathway research, where isolating variables is essential to interpreting results correctly.
