Melanotan Storage & Shelf Life: A Research Guide

Peptide stability is one of the most overlooked variables in research reproducibility. Even a high-purity peptide will degrade if stored poorly, and degradation isn't always visible — which makes correct storage essential for reliable results. Storage requirements differ significantly between lyophilised (freeze-dried) and reconstituted material.

Lyophilised (Unreconstituted) Vials

In its lyophilised powder form, a peptide is at its most stable, because the absence of water dramatically slows the chemical reactions that cause breakdown. Stored correctly — at -20°C, protected from light — many lyophilised peptides remain stable for extended periods. Keep vials sealed until use, and allow a vial to return to room temperature before opening to avoid condensation forming inside it.

Reconstituted Vials

Once a peptide is reconstituted with bacteriostatic water, its stability window shortens considerably, because it's now in solution where degradation proceeds faster. Reconstituted vials should be refrigerated at 2–8°C, kept out of light, and used within the timeframe indicated by your laboratory's standard protocol. The benzyl alcohol in bacteriostatic water helps inhibit microbial growth in a multi-use vial, but it does not stop chemical degradation of the peptide itself.

The Enemies of Peptide Stability

Spotting Degradation

Cloudiness, discolouration, or unexpected particulate in a reconstituted solution can indicate a problem, though degradation is often not visible to the eye — which is exactly why controlled storage from the outset matters more than trying to judge a vial by appearance. For correct reconstitution technique, see our guide on reconstituting lyophilised peptides.
